Children readers: how to create reading habits in front of the power of screens

Generating the habit of reading in children is the great challenge that we have today as mothers and fathers facing the omnipresence of the screens. Transmitting a taste for books is an art, it is a task that pays off. That there are many books available at home and several places of reading, help. They must see us read. To read them since they are babies, to create that ritual of reading before sleeping is magical and lasts forever (believe me). Generating habits that last. Take them to our favorite bookstore and that time stops there is priceless. To visit fairs of used books, to open books that have past histories has its mystery. Visit libraries too.

Enjoy having a nice edition of a book that we already read, find the books we read in childhood to read them with our children is exciting. Let children appropriate the books, carry them in their backpacks and take them on a trip, be part of them, of their life. Let the books circulate around the house. Lend and exchange books. Read them several times. Nothing more beautiful than giving a book to a child, offering her or him reading time.

I always remember what Graciela Montes, a great Argentine writer, once said, “a child can be a reader from a very young age, even before he has learned to decode letters … Without that reading position that appears very early in life, without curiosity and the desire to see things from another side, it would not be worth even learning to read ».

Montes believes in the child reader and always gave her and him a great space to grow as a reader without taking a paternalistic position as a writer. I think that we should have that same confidence as parents when accompanying them and throwing them into the wonderful world of literature.
