“The Cookbook” is a series of photographs by the artist Lucia Fainzilber. In this series, the visual game created by these images dialogues with the representation of the Renaissance still lifes. Images that tell us about the relationship we have today with food and the way we perceive it digitally.
This project “is an homage to the new visual hegemony that food carries in contemporary art: a trendsetting agent, an art form, the subject of food has even landed leading roles in television series and awarded it its own food porn and foodie hashtag.”
With an overhead point of view, the different ingredients are presented on a neat tableware, which rest on a plane- tablecloth. The inclusion of flowers is also very important in the final composition. “Each of these dishes features a different combination of ingredients, all of which coexist in an attempt to create a harmonious feast for the eyes.”
Lucía was born in Buenos Aires in 1986, she is a fashion and art photographer. She studied at the Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires, where she graduated in Art Direction for Films. After graduation, she worked in post-production, correcting color in many national and international films. That was her first approach to color, which became an essential element in her work.
In 2011 she moved to New York, where she has been living ever since, working for various photographers and developing her own work.
This series was exhibited alongside an installation, “The Cookbook Table” at Praxis Art Gallery New York in 2019.
“The coockbook” is not a book, but it appeals to cookbooks guarded by housewives where cultural identity and meticulous care of ingredients intersect with consumption and daily tasks.
